The Special Operations Division is comprised of the Special Operations Unit, the Auxiliary Police Unit, and the Animal Control Unit. The division consists of one Lieutenant, two Sergeants, eight patrolmen, a K-9 and two civilians.
The function of the Special Operations Division is to provide additional resources to the patrol division to assist them in combating crime and resolving quality of life issues which are impacting the community. These resources can be deployed in a variety of methods to meet the needs of the department and the community.
In addition, the Special Operations Division is responsible for devising comprehensive plans for large scale police operations, the implementation of these plans and the supervision of the personnel assigned. Special Operations Supervisors have received extensive training in the Incident Command System which is utilized for all large scale police operations within the City of Somerville.
