THE SOMERVILLE POLICE BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY AWARD
is presented for outstanding dedication and effort for the month of February 2013 to
Fred Hartsgrove
For the last 28 years, Fred Hartsgrove has been responsible for the maintenance of the Somerville Police Department’s fleet. This in itself is a monumental challenge considering that police vehicles run 24/7 and the inventory is varied, including special operation vehicles, incident command vehicles, motorcycles, unmarked vehicles and cruisers. During the month of February, the state was struck with a blizzard of historic proportions, with nearly 30 inches of snow resulting in a declared State of Emergency. Storms of this magnitude take a toll on the police fleet, with windshield wipers, tires and headlights, among other parts being affected. To ensure that emergency vehicles were operational during this critical period, Fred remained on duty for the entire duration of the storm, from Friday through Sunday afternoon, and successfully managed to keep all our emergency vehicles operational. This is just one example of Fred’s dedication to the department and his contribution to public safety. Fred’s service merits recognition for his actions which consistently extend beyond the call of duty.
